The Directors of the Open Eye Gallery and staff were saddened to hear of the death of their friend and artist John Bellany at seventeen minutes past seven on Wednesday 28th August 2013.

With his family by his side, he passed away in his studio with paintbrush in hand. His son Paul wrote to us; “His passion was life and he painted as if each day was his last”. John was one of Scotland’s most acclaimed and celebrated artists. The Open Eye Gallery has had a long established relationship with him since the 1970s when the Directors first met with him in Edinburgh.

We have fond memories of planning exhibitions in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Helmsdale and at the European Parliament in Brussels and in Barga, Italy. John was a generous, kind hearted and passionate man who will be sorely missed in the Gallery and by all in the art world, not just in Scotland but around the world. Our thoughts are with Helen and family at this very sad time.
