Police in East Lothian are appealing for witnesses after a woman was assaulted in North Berwick this morning (Friday).

The 44-year-old victim was walking her Spaniel puppy within the wooded area adjacent to Tantallon Road at around 6.30am when a male approached her and knocked her to the ground.

A struggle ensued and the woman fought with the suspect, who then fled towards the rugby club.

Following the incident the women flagged down two males in a small silver car who took her home where she contacted police.

Officers are now keen to trace these individuals and anyone else who was in the area at the time or who may have information that can assist with their enquiries.

The suspect is described as white, approximately 5ft 10ins tall with an unshaven complexion and wearing a black tracksuit with the hood up.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “The woman was left extremely distressed as a result of this incident and we are keen to trace anyone who was in the Tantallon Road area on Friday morning and remembers seeing anything suspicious.

“We are still trying to establish the full circumstances surrounding this attack and would urge the occupants of the silver vehicle, who assisted the woman, to contact police immediately.

“Similarly, anyone with any other information relevant to this investigation is also asked to come forward.”

Those with information can contact Police Scotland on 101 or alternatively, the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
