Man charged with assault to appear in court today

A 27 year old man has been charged in connection with an attack on a young woman which took place around 6.30am on Tuesday 25 June 2013 in the Canongate.

The victim was allegedly dragged into a close at Old Tolbooth Wynd, but the assailant was apparently disturbed by a passing jogger.

Last week, Detective Sergeant Iain Ramsay appealed for anyone who was in the area at the time and may have seen or heard a distressed female, or spotted a man fitting the description given running down the Canongate to get in touch, and indicated that the police were following a positive line of enquiry.

The man is scheduled to appear from custody at Edinburgh Sheriff Court later today.
