Council Elections 2012 – Meet the Candidates – Stefan Tymkewycz
Stefan Tymkewycz, was born in Edinburgh at Elsie Inglis maternity hospital in Abbeyhill. His Ukrainian father arrived in Scotland over 60 years ago and settled in Dalkeith where he still lives today.
Stefan was educated at primary and secondary schools in Dalkeith and then went on to further education at Esk Valley College. He worked for Parson Peebles in Edinburgh, but along with many others was made redundant in the manufacturing depression of the early eighties.
He then worked abroad in France, Germany and Greece and has travelled extensively, including North Africa and the Middle East. He later returned to Esk Valley College where he taught engineering for a brief period before joining the police in 1984.
He became involved in politics and local community issues on leaving the police service in 2001. Stefan now runs his own property business in Edinburgh.
Tymkewycz stood for election to Edinburgh City Council in 2003 in Meadowbank Ward and gained the highest vote of any SNP candidate in the city, falling just 205 votes short of defeating the then deputy leader of the council.
In May 2007 he was elected to the Scottish Parliament and Edinburgh City Council. He gave up his Parliamentary seat later that year to focus on his council duties representing the residents of Craigentinny/Duddingston Ward. He is on the Council’s Transport, Infrastructure & Environment Committee, Audit Committee and he is a member of Lothian & Borders Police Board.
Stefan comes from a family of seven children. His five sisters and brother have mostly gone into public service employment working in education and the NHS. His main interests include; cycling, hill walking, cinema, theatre, keeping fit, reading and of course politics and current affairs. He has followed the Scottish international football team around the world and is a season ticket holder at Hibernian FC.
