Council Elections 2012 – Meet the candidates – Norman Work

Norman Work is the SNP candidate for Almond Ward.

He is standing for re-election to the ward which includes Queensferry, Kirkliston, Newbridge, Carmond, Barnton, Silverknowes & Davidson’s Mains

For the last five years he has served as the Vice Convenor of Health, Social Care and Housing Committee within the SNP/LibDem Administration in the City of Edinburgh Council

One of his key responsibilities has been to build relationships with council tenants their representatives and partners, to this end, he has been the Convenor of the Tenants Participation Working Group and the Multi Storey Working Group

He is the key politician within the Administration for homelessness. He chairs the City’s Homelessness Forum and has been instrumental in the first tender for Homelessness Services. This model and the City’s Homelessness Strategy, directed by Councillor Work, are proposed as models of Best Practice to the Scottish Government.

Work said that one of the first things he delivered as Vice Convenor of Housing was the change in the Affordable Housing Policy to move rural West Edinburgh in line with the rest of the City, from 15% to 25% and was successful in campaigning to keep the local connection element in housing allocation for rural west Edinburgh

He also signed the agreement to purchase the first council housing for Edinburgh in over twenty years

Councillor Work lives in his ward in Queensferry and is married with a grown-up son. Prior to entering full-time politics he was a City taxi driver, which he now does on an ad hoc basis and uses as his “reality check”
