Edinburgh Festival Fringe: Fresher the Musical ***

This musical which is being staged at the Pleasance Dome needs just a little more polish to its acting. I will say that this was reviewed on the first day of the preview shows and that there were some technical faults that got in the way of the performance.

The cast appeared nervous at the beginning of the show, and they were at times overpowered by the loudness of the music.

But safe to say that, if and when the faults are removed, then this will be a show worth seeing.

The story line was stretched out probably a little longer than it should have been, but the ending was powerful and there were convincing performances by the actors portraying Basil & Tuc which improved as the show went on.

Bits of the student based humour about sex & booze used were quite funny and the audience picked up on this. The company say about themselves on their own website:-“FRESHER The Musical is a new theatrical phenomenon, which, since last year’s Fringe, has been touring UK universities; quickly becoming one of the most in-demand productions for Freshers’ Weeks in 2011. The amateur performance rights have seen a national uptake, with shows to be performed by amateur groups in many different institutions. “
