Changes to recycling of garden waste
The Council has redesigned the way garden waste is collected for recycling and residents will notice some changes over the next few months.
Garden waste is one of the Council’s biggest recycling success stories – with around 120,000 homes across Edinburgh recycling waste from their gardens.
The number of households taking part has increased dramatically, and the Council has had to redesign the service to cope with the huge demand.
Now, plans are in place to collect garden waste five days a week – which will replace the existing Tuesday to Friday collection service.
The routes the collection vehicles will take will also change, to improve and make the service work better.
Many city residents will have their brown wheelie bins collected on a different day to what they are used to – which may lead to some disruption while the new collections routes are tested.
And to put the changes in place, the Garden Waste four weekly collections have been extended into March – and the new routes will start on Monday 28 March 2011.
Residents can type their postcode into the Green Box Day website to find out when they will have their garden waste bins collected.
Councillor Robert Aldridge, Environmental Leader, said: “We have seen our garden waste recycling service become more popular over the last few years and this is great news because more people will be reducing, reusing and recycling. We are asking for residents to bear with us while we reshape this important recycling facility and make the service better for the future.”
The garden waste recycling service collects; flowers and plants, garden weeds, grass clippings, hedge trimmings, leaves, small branches, woody stems and cut up Christmas trees.
