Lothian and Borders Police are warning the public to remain vigilant of a suspected conman following a suspicious call to a business property in Edinburgh.
A solicitors firm in Albany Street received a call from a male around 10am on Wednesday (9th February) who claimed to represent ‘Midlothian Police’.
The male then tried to secure donations for a police magazine that aimed to benefit local children.
Staff declined the man’s offer and challenged his authenticity before he ended the phone call.
Police are now urging other businesses and members of the public not to be caught out by this scam.
A police spokesman said: ‘This male claimed to be a member of our staff, but fortunately those within the solicitors’ office were not taken in by his ruse.
‘Local businesses and residents should be wary of any similar approaches and report any suspicious incidents to police.
‘Police officers, whether they are on or off-duty, carry their warrant cards and will be happy to produce them if requested.
‘If you are unsure of the authenticity of anyone claiming to work for Lothian and Borders Police you should contact us immediately.’
