Something Fishy going on this Friday

Dermot O’Leary’s Fishy Fishy Seafood Brasserie, will be joining other companies associated with the sea by supporting Seafarers UK’s Fish and Chip Feast. On Friday 24th September the restaurants in both Brighton and Poole will be serving a special fish dish and donating a percentage of the proceeds to maritime charity, Seafarers UK.

The-Mercat-Bar-Restaurant-with-people-OutsideAnd locally The Mercat Bar & Restaurant is one of 70 venues across the UK involved in this project. They want to encourage as many people as possible to come in and eat their fish and chips this Friday to raise money for this good cause.  For every fish related dish sold at The Mercat they will make a donation to Seafarers UK.

The charity, which supports fishermen and others who have worked at sea also has support from several other maritime companies including Maersk, DFDS Seaways (formerly Norfolk Lines), NYK Group Europe, and Fish ‘n’ Chick ‘n and is asking more businesses to get involved. The events an opportunity for restaurants, cafes, pubs, fish and chip shops and staff canteens across the UK to serve fish and chips to customers and raise much needed funds for Seafarers UK.

Dermot O’Leary said, “At Fishy Fishy we try to support our local fishermen and women as much as possible, so we are really happy to be getting involved in the Fish and Chip Feast event at our Brighton and Poole restaurants to help raise much needed funds for the fishing community.”

By supporting the Fish & Chip Feast, companies will be helping fishing communities which often face problems like poverty, disability and bereavement as a result of their occupation. Deep sea fishing is one of the UK’s most dangerous jobs and over 45% of fishermen have needed medical care in order to continue working at sea.

Seafarers UK’s Director General Commodore Barry Bryant said: “We are delighted that companies are supporting Seafarers UK by taking part in the Fish & Chip Feast. Fishing communities often face problems and rely on our charity to help them. Every penny raised will go towards helping fishermen and other seafarers who are struggling in very difficult times. “
