Nick Cody arrives on stage after the sell-out crowd are treated to an uncensored gangster rap playlist. Looking at the Aussie, complete with a rather impressively groomed beard, one wondered if they’d got the tunes mixed up with a neighbouring show. However it’s his admission of having a ‘Gansta Gran’ that tears up the form book and sets the tempo for the rest of the show.
Returning from Melbourne following his debut last year, Cody commands the lecture theatre with a decidedly laid back approach (bordering on horizontal at times, such is he enjoying proceedings), with his ability to tell cleverly constructed tales he’s picked up on his travels – which are now, Cody explains, at the ‘hotel stage’ in his life.
From ‘halfway to boiling’ temperatures in Dubai to a drunken takeaway episode involving his ‘loose unit’ of a father in Manhattan, Cody’s touring tales are likely to resonate with many of his audience throughout the run of shows.
It’s the 29 year-old’s honest and hilarious appraisal of the usage of Airbnbs that sets the crowd off into a frenzy and this moves on sweetly to one of Cody’s main frustrations in life – the ‘Trip Advisor’ review, or more the reviewer themselves.
Like most men of his age, it’s the simple joys of beer, sport and Subway sarnies that keep him happy in life, along with his fiancé who appears to have a wonderful ability to be a few steps ahead of spotting trouble heading his way.
There are some classic tales which are complemented by tack sharp one-liners in an hour where laughter wasn’t in short supply.
I’m certain those who witness Cody in action this year will look back in the not too distant future and remember where they saw him first.
Nick Cody – Come Get Some is at Assembly George Square Studios, 21.20h (60 mins). To get some – and you need to be quick – tickets can be booked here
